Cavernoma Overview:

  • Cavernoma also known as cavernous malformation, cavernoma, cavernous hemangioma, cavernous angioma, and angioma refers to a vascular lesion which is a well circumscribed benign vascular hamartoma with irregular thin and thick walled sinusoidal vascular channels located within brain or spinal cord which lack intervening neural parenchyma, large feeding arteries, or draining veins. They are multiple in up to 50% of cases. These lesions may arise de novo and its natural history may consist of hemorrhage, growth, shrinkage, or unchanged size and morphology.

  • Patients with cavernoma may present with seizure (60%), progressive neurological deficit (50%), hemorrhage (20%), or less likely with hydrocephalus. Over 50% of these lesions are found incidentally.
