Parkinson's Disease / Essential Tremor Overview:
- Also known as idiopathic paralysis agitans is characterized by triad of tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia.
- It affects approximately 1% of Americans older than 50 years of age.
- Although no definitive known environmental or genetic causes have been discovered to cause this disease, it is known to be caused by degeneration of pigmented dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra.
- Histologically, Lewy bodies are the hallmark of Parkinson’s disease.
